Kevin Held is Sought to Memorialize the Events

September 11th, 2001, will forever be known as one of the worst days in American history. It is already considered a major event in the modern era. To the American people, it meant a lot and people responded in many different ways. Some people prayed, other donated money to certain charity funds, some got involved politically, some even enlisted—others chose to seek out ways to memorialize and forever remember both the events that transpired that day and the victims of the attacks.

Kevin Held is one man who sought to memorialize the events of that day in a special and unique way. When you hear the word “quilt”, you probably do not instantly think “memorial!”, but Kevin Held crafted an idea that made sense to just about anyone and clicked with many people all over the United States. Held’s idea was the 9/11 Memorial Quilt, which was a large project to which he devoted countless hours.

The idea behind the 9/11 Memorial Quilt is that thousands of classrooms, businesses, police departments, and church groups would each buy and then decorate a king-sized bed sheet. Each sheet would be dedicated to one of the victims of the September 11th attacks and would be decorated in a unique way. Then, all of the sheets would be sewn together into a massive quilt that Kevin Held said would span twenty-five football fields.
